Compassion and Fairness - The Common Sense Approach

" The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth."

John F. Kennedy, U.S. President, 1961-1963

S.T.E.A.M.

Steve advocates STEAM to advance education in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. STEAM education is crucial to educate and prepare the next generation of the American workforce.

Community College Student Success Act

The act would provide resources to public community colleges across the country, with priority for underserved colleges with high percentages of low-income and minority students, allowing these institution to expand support services such as academic advising, academic and career support, and financial support.

Pell Grant

Steve advocates expanding Pell Grant eligibility thus making college more affordable for middle-class families. By expanding college access, Pell Grants help narrow the postsecondary achievement gap between low- and moderate-income students and those of greater means. By enabling students to work less and take more courses, they also help accelerate graduation and improve college completion rates.

Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act

Steve supports this pending important legislation that allows American consumers with outstanding student loan debt to refinance at lower interest rates currently being issued on new federal and private student loans. Borrowers looking to refinance their student loans would have to be current on their payments and meet certain debt-to-income ratios.

National Health Services Corp

Advocating programs that repay student loans in exchange for service to the community, such as the National Health Services Corp. The National Health Service Corps builds healthy communities by supporting qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care. Medical (MD or DO) and dental (DDS or DMD) students may earn up to $120,000 in their final year of school provided they work at least three years at an approved NHSC site in a Health Professional Shortage Area of greatest need.

Aim Higher campaign

"Access" to ensure that all students have access to a quality higher education; "Affordability" by strengthening and stabilizing the Pell Grant program and expanding access to affordable student loans and loan repayment, while incentivizing states to reinvest in their colleges and universities; "Completion" so that all students complete their higher education on time with a meaningful degree or credential.

Perkins Loan Extension Act

Advocate for the Perkins Loan Extension Act which is administered directly by colleges and universities who originate the loans, counsel their students through repayment, and select contractors for servicing and collection.

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Support the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) which contains measures to maintain high standards and accountability, decreases the use of disciplinary practices that remove kids from the classroom, and provides better access to high-quality preschools. It allows individual states and local school districts expanded authority to evaluate the performance of schools.
